As the season goes on It’s revealed that the public believes Frank died of a heart attack caused by an accidental overdose of his liver medication and the showrunners ended on that Claire cliffhanger because of the show’ long-gestating relationship with the audience, who the pair said are active participants in where the story hypothetically goes.
